in Teaching And Learning sessions

Norms and protocols or basic standards
v practice active listening
v help and encourage each other

v give and accept feedback from peers
v complete the task( stay on task )
- Numbered heads together – students arranged in teams/groups
v Number-off students in their teams/groups from 1 to 4
v Announce a question – time limit
v Students put heads together to come with an answer
v Call a number and ask all students with the number to stand
and answer the question
v Recognize the responses given – discuss
2. Jigsaw Puzzle I
v Assign each student in a team ¼ of the topic to investigate
v The student teaches the others or help to put together a team
product
Jigsaw Puzzle II
v Students in original groups/teams read the entire selection focussing on the assigned part of the lesson or topic
v Students meet with their expert group which has members of different teams who have studied the same selection – to discuss questions provided by the teacher
v Students return to their original group/team and take turns teaching teammates about the section they have studied
v Teacher then asseses the mastery of the overall topic
3. Tea Party
v Students form 2 concentric circles/lines facing each other
v Ask a question( on any content )
v Students discuss the answer with the students facing them
v After one minute, the outside circle or line moves to the right so that the students have new partners
v Pose a second question for them to discuss
v Continue with 5 more questions for them to discuss
v Students can write questions on cards to review for a test through this ' Tea Party ' method
4. Think-Pair-Share
v A 3- step cooperative structure
v 1st step- individuals think silently about a question posed by the teacher
v 2nd step – individuals pair up and exchange thoughts / understanding / knowledge
v 3rd step – the pairs share their responses with other pairs, other teams, or the entire group
All activities, 1 – 4 above can be applied to teaching and learning either inside or outside classrooms, irrespective of subjects( humanities,languages,technical & vocational or science/maths subjects) .
